Mental illness is the last frontier of modern medicine; we would never poke fun at cancer patients, but it socially acceptable to call someone crazy. Mental illness has carried a huge social stigma partly because of mentally unstable individuals in the news. They tend to be portrayed as violent in the media while toting weapons. Many people feel reluctant to seek out help for any mental disorder due to being labeled as crazy. In the US, we have over 1.5 million individuals with some sort of mental disorder which can be very debilitating over the course of one’s lifetime. The cost associated with treatment can be out of reach for many sick individuals.

Talkspace is an innovative technology that destigmatizes therapy sessions for individuals. Patients can have therapy sessions with a licensed therapist by phone, video which increases participation by the patient. Talkspace was co-founded by Oren Frank as a way to help the millions of Americans suffering in silence. In summary, Talkspace has provided a much-needed avenue to make therapy sessions accessible to those that truly need it. They have effectively humanized mental illness and they have allowed therapy to many individuals with this innovative app.
