It a recent press conference, Securus, announced that it was collaborating with Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections (LA DOC) to offer all inmates in the served facilities a free call per day. This follows recent floods in the Louisiana area. The free call would help them stay in connect with loved ones who may be affected by the latest floods in the region. Families and friends of inmates are anxious about the state of correctional facilities in areas affected by floods.
Richard Smith, the CEO of Securus Technologies believes that the allowing inmates to connect with significant others will go a long way. He further stressed that the effects of the disastrous floods cannot be underestimated, and “extraordinary” measures had to be taken to reduce stress and anxiety among prisoners and family. Richard added that Securus Technologies had donated $50, 000 to the Inmate Welfare Fund at Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections to assist prisoners. The welfare of prisoners is at stake during floods, which have affected the area severely.
Secures technologies and the Louisiana Department of Corrections will allow the free phone calls through September 7th to all detainees. The company estimated that 250, 000 call connections would be made. These calls will cost Securus $300,000 to facilitate.
Securus Technologies serves more than 3,400 correctional and law enforcement agencies through contracts. This translates to more than 1,200,000 inmates across the North America region.
